"Women's Work"
“Women’s Work” is a series of paintings informed by family photographs from my grandmother’s photo album. Memories that I was not alive to see, photos depicting tender moments between strangers and family, I aim to translate through painting. Referring to these images and reconfiguring them into imagined spaces, I consider what happens between the translation of a photographic image into an oil painting. The family album to me feels both somber and tender, personal and emblematic. These are images I have spent extensive time with. Each time I do, I find something that draws me nearer to understanding my motivation behind painting them. It is this labor of observing, reconstructing, and collaging my grandmother’s physical memories which drives me to make this work.
